Water Journey

Need

Affinity Water ran a programme to deliver environmental innovation in AMP7 to improve its customers’ knowledge, evidence of water use, and need for water efficiency. The goal of the programme was to bring together sector experts, charities, community and environmental groups and other stakeholders to trial the delivery of a range of innovative multi-party projects, linked to different environmental themes and water use behaviours.  

Approach

To create a new and engaging module to educate the community over and above the traditional campaign Affinity Water were running – Save Our Streams (SOS). 

The aim of this project was to increase awareness, and engagement and drive action through these key stakeholders. 

Deliverables

The deliverables included:  

  • The design, development and production of a single-player adventure map where the child will play as a water droplet travelling through the water cycle.  The journey will start in the clouds, and will finish in clouds, while adventuring child will be acquainted with not only natural flow of water but how affinity water the company plays a part of the cycle.  
  • Design and build educational material.
  • Facilitate the testing of modules with multiple children’s steering groups which was made up of Affinity Water employee’s families.  
  • Design, develop, and deploy measurement tools to gather evidence of impact. 
  • Once testing was signed off the module was packaged for deployment.  
    • The single player map package game is accessibility for Affinity Water customers through QR codes which can be placed on Affinity Water customer channels i.e. customer letters, customer portal, etc  
    • Ongoing support for accessing the game and troubleshoot issues.
Benefits

The platform provides a uniquely interesting way for children to engage with water-saving and boost their awareness and knowledge of water efficiency for life. It’s an easy-access tool that supports the curriculum and encourages multidisciplinary learning (especially in STEM subjects) with measurable learnings.  

  • Families learn together – research shows that children influence adult to change behaviour  
  • Community members – particularly the most vulnerable members of communities, including awareness of how Affinity Water can support to address water poverty.  
  • Future Consumers – Future water consumers will be emerging through the school programme.  
  • Potential future employees across the water and utility sector – children who are inspired what they have learnt and their interest in STEM subjects and careers in the sector.
