Hydrogen Education

Need

The game’s primary goal was to effectively convey key messages about hydrogen to Members of Parliament (MPs) and motivate them to act within the parliamentary setting. Highlighting the importance of decarbonisation in achieving the 2050 net-zero target, the game emphasised that approximately 30% of total energy consumption stems from heating homes and buildings. It underscored the minimal disruption consumers would experience when transitioning from gas to hydrogen, an aspect that might have been overlooked or underestimated. Additionally, the game emphasised that the current gas network and all appliances are already capable of accommodating a 20% hydrogen blend, laying the groundwork for a smoother transition.

Approach

The game was strategically designed with a sequential layout to offer MPs a quick, yet interactive experience aimed at garnering their support for Cadent’s Hydrogen journey and helping them understand their role in it.

Initially, players encountered a hallway displaying key messages emphasising the significance of MP support in transitioning to hydrogen. Following this, players engaged in a gamified experience highlighting the differences between natural gas and hydrogen, fostering a deeper understanding of the transition process. Lastly, players visited scenes that explained the specific actions required from MPs to facilitate the transition effectively. This sequential structure ensured that MPs received a comprehensive overview of the importance of their involvement and the steps necessary to advance the Hydrogen journey.

Deliverables
  • MP drop-in sessions at Portcullis House showcasing our VR headset and Hydrogen boiler.
  • Built and tested mini hydrogen module to be used through VR headset.
  • Hy4Life Event. London for 2 days in June 23 – several MPs experienced the game.
  • Train the trainer sessions completed so the Cadent external affairs team could take the VR and laptops and run the game through both Party
  • Party Conferences in October 2023.
  • Game successfully used at both party conferences with great feedback received.
Benefits

Firstly, it generated enthusiasm for the future of hydrogen by immersing learners in its potential applications and benefits.

Secondly, the module showcases the efficacy and efficiency of game based EdTech learning, illustrating its capability to engage and educate effectively.

Additionally, it serves as an introduction to hydrogen and highlights its significance in the broader energy landscape, empowering learners with essential knowledge about this emerging energy source.

As participants engage in the learning experience, they not only deepen their understanding of Cadent’s current operations and future aspirations regarding hydrogen but also gain valuable insights into the broader energy transition. The drop-in event succinctly captures the essence of this innovative learning approach, emphasising Cadent’s commitment to leveraging virtual reality gamification to foster inclusive and immersive learning experiences for all participants.
