Disaster Relief

Need

The purpose of the module is not only to inspire young people to select STEM careers but also to raise awareness of the important work the RAF is consistently providing! 
 
The objective of the game is to encourage young persons to keep studying STEM subjects, focus on engineering and maths, encourage children to problem solve and raise awareness of climate change causing natural disasters and the level of aide RAF is consistently providing in these situations.  

Approach

In our Minecraft Education lessons students take on the role of an RAF disaster relief team member tasked with providing aid to an area devastated by an earthquake. Working as a team students will use and refine their STEM skills to complete various tasks. 

  • Reconnaissance of the area assessing situation and understand what supplies will be needed and how they will be transported. 
  • Set up base of operations and assess situation for power, shelter, food, transportation, and infrastructure. 
  • Repair and distribute aid and support to area. 
  • Leave area with ability to self-sustain renewable energy sources.

The module is a teacher led module where children can join the world together in Minecraft Education. Teams of 5 players per team with ability to have 6 teams to suit up to a class size of 30 children within the game at same time. Key Stage 2 curriculum focusing on Maths, Geography, Engineering and Physics.  

Deliverables

We facilitated the design and delivery of tailored Modules to the specific requirements from the RAF stakeholders.

  • Design and build of Minecraft modules. 
  • Each module was developed and tested with pilot groups before development freeze and full game UAT.  
  • School engagement activities including campaign to find schools, session planning with schools, pre event technology testing; and in person school delivery.
