Climate Change
Need
It can be safely assumed that the vast majority of UK citizens now harbour concerns regarding climate change. However, awareness of an issue, without the appropriate means to tackle the problem, often proves just as challenging as ignorance itself. Recent research from a global study led by Bath University across 10 countries has found that 60% of young people experience climate anxiety.
Approach
Using inspiration from the book “The Genie in the Bottle”, we seek to encourage immediate climate action from children, which will filter downstream to parents, educational institutions, and politicians, thus fostering sustained behavioural change.
- We have produced the 3rd edition of “The Genie in the Bottle” book which is available in print and digital download.
- We have updated the animated video and using it within schools as part of the climate change lesson.
- We have created in Minecraft four Climate Change modules which contain 4 hours’ worth of teacher led lessons.
Deliverables
- Update and re-publish the book and animation video.
- 10 lesson plans per subject (no change to existing curriculum or any extra embedding for teachers to do): total 90-100 lesson plans: Maths, English, Art & Design, Geography, History, DT, Science, Music, Languages.
- Four teacher-led climate change lessons in Minecraft.
Benefits
Our aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from schools in line with the Paris agreement. This will mean a minimum reduction of 7.8% pa every year. Initially, this can be achieved through targeting electricity use and measurement of falls in use. We will obtain feedback on other actions we can influence (eg: reduced water usage, 100% renewable energy provider; less ruminant meat; more local and seasonal food–mainly vegetables; greener transport,). We will also seek evidence of “spread “of behaviour into households.
The immediate goal is to ensure a 50% reduction in scopes 1-3 carbon emissions targets per annum across all sectors, in line with IPCC and COP26 to limit warming to below 2C ideally.
Long-term, our targets include rapidly upskilling the next generation to work in a transforming utilities sector, furthering industry links and partnerships for students, and forging the path to becoming a dominant player in digital education sphere with a global educational reach.
